What SCUD Power did: Keep Communication&Ongoing Support; Rapid Delivery & Team Collaboration

 

 

Background

It was the height of the green mobility gold rush, a frantic era when boldest ride-hailing start-ups raced to absorb e-bikes and e-scooters into a single urban ecosystem. Fueled by a manic wave of venture capital, startups grew overnight, with one pioneer becoming the fastest company in history to hit a billion-dollar valuation. Terrified of losing their short-distance market, dominant platforms weaponized their cash, spending hundreds of millions to buy up municipal bike networks and lock down city transit rights. Yet, the intense pressure to out-deploy rivals forced a dangerous shortcut, rushing less-proven battery solution onto harsh public streets and setting the stage for a violent collision between hyper-growth ambition and the brutal realities of physical engineering.

 

One client of SCUD Power used to be a very bold startup specializing in urban electric mobility solutions too. Early in the year, we signed an initiative State Of Works (SOW)  and design alignment, positioning us as their potential supplier for customized batteries solution. At the start, they stuck with off-the-shelf, semi-customized batteries. It was a classic shortcut for a quick launch under market requirements and time constraints, even though it meant relying on rushed, surface-level safety testing. At that stage, even though they had long-term plans to eventually adopt fully customized batteries, they just couldn’t justify making such a massive, disruptive shift right away.Their then off-the-shelf option looked to be "good enough" to get them out the door, so they put the custom plans on the back burner for a quick launch when needed. We totally got that—it was just the pragmatic choice for them at the time, so we didn't push it. But we didn’t give up and we did more than expected. We helped them analyze their existing battery design and proposed design optimizations, though they don’t have a motivation to adopt our proposals into a new battery project immediately.

 

Crucially, however, the client was operating under immense external pressure. They were pushing forward with large-scale deployments of their shared mobility systems across major metropolitan markets. Facing stringent delivery deadlines from institutional investors and municipal partners—along with the threat/risk of substantial financial penalties if they failed to meet the delivery deadline —delivering reliable vehicles on time was a 'make-or-break' imperative for their ongoing funding and corporate survival."

The Challenge

With their product design still unfrozen and mass production nowhere in sight, the client suddenly hit a wall. Out of nowhere, they were hit by a catastrophic safety crisis: battery smoke and fire incidents breaking out in the field. When the first battery smoked out in the field, the client dismmised it as a statistical anomaly, a low-probability fluke. But that complacency shattered when a series of fires erupted within a single week. Photos of charred frames and melted plastic flooded social media, turning their massive rollout into a public relations nightmare overnight.

 

The sudden string of failures caught the team completely off guard. This wasn't a theoretical issue anymore—they had units in the field, and now they were looking at the imminent loss of the government contract keeping the lights on.Missing their deadlines meant facing massive penalties that would instantly wipe out everything they had built so far. Furthermore, they were staring down a brutal ultimatum from city transit authorities to fix the battery architecture or get kicked out of the market entirely. With massive milestone penalties threatening to wipe out their funding and destroy everything.

 

With time running out, they were forced into a corner with two questions:

(1)How to rapidly develop a safe, production-ready battery pack on a tight timeline?

(2)How to keep the government contract on track and guarantee vehicle delivery?

 

Our Team Action

Based on our expertise in custom battery solutions, we were able to help the cilent out  by deploying a three-pronged strategy: preemptive preparation, agile delivery, and deep collaboration.

 

1. Preemptive Preparation

Even when the client was conservative and requirements remained unclear, we proactively initiated structural design optimization and mold development research based on early technical feedback. This created critical technical buffers and time advantages for emergency response later.

 

2. Rapid Upstream and Downstream Delivery

Once the incident erupted, our team completed the development and trial production of multiple complex molds in an extremely short time frame(at about one month, usually it takes about 45 days). In addition, achieving full compliance also took considerable time and effort.

Finally,we efficiently pushed through sample validation and air freight delivery while strictly maintaining the highest quality standards. Ultimately, we delivered just in time — within the client’s absolute deadline — ensuring business continuity.

 

3. Communication & Collaboration

From the beginning, we actively showed our capability and expertise with building trust through professional analysis. During the process, we maintained high-frequency internal cross-departermental coordination. The client’s senior executives stayed on-site multiple times, while our team worked through holidays without break to support certification and production. This seamless integration across R&D, manufacturing, and logistics earned us deep trust from the client.
